Jeanette started her career in the nail industry at the tender age of eighteen when she undertook a nail training course in Brisbane. Jeanette became a passionate nail artist. She absolutely fell in love with her profession.? She worked as a nail technician in several hair and beauty salons and also ran a nail business from her home for more than ten years.

Jeanette developed a fabulous reputation within the nail industry. She was always in demand and she forged deep, long-standing friendships with the people she worked with and also with her wonderful clients.

Jeanette, however, was constantly amazed that the nail technicians she met seemed to have had very poor training. In fact, she had taught herself many of the techniques that are used in the JTTA syllabus today. She wanted to pass on her passion and love of the industry ? to give others the same opportunities that she had received.

Jeanette decided to embark on a career into the education sector of the beauty industry and became a fully qualified Trainer and Assessor ? realising her dream to change the lives of others.

Jeanette was “snapped up” at her very first interview and has worked in several private Beauty Colleges in Brisbane, moulding her students into high quality nail professionals, many of whom have gone on to win National Awards.

To top off her achievements, Jeanette has won many awards in the Open Sections and Master Class at the Australian Professional Nail Championships 2006, 2008, and 2009, with a First Place in Technical Combination (Sculptures/Tip & Overlay);? 2nd place in Sculptures; 2nd Place in Tip and Overlay and 2nd Place in French Twist (Nail art).

Jeanette Thomas Training Academy is the evolution of this fabulous woman.

Her ambition to provide top quality, self-paced, no pressure training led her to opening her own Training Academy. Jeanette created a unique on-line learning system; devised an extremely user-friendly web site and launched Jeanette Thomas Training Academy in 2007.

At the Sydney International Beauty Expo 2006 in Darling Harbour, at the Convention and Exhibition Centre. Jeanette Thomas Competed for her first time in the Nail Awards, and took home a trophy for 3rd Place in the Speed Category. Competitors from all over Australia had 45 minutes to complete a full set of perfect nails. Jeanette choose to perform a set of acrylic french white tips on her model.

Jeanette Thomas competed in the APAA Australian Nail Cup Competition on the 15th and 16th of June 2008. And took home a 3rd Place Trophy in the gel category for Sculptured/Tips & Overlay.

MMA other wise known as methyl methacrylate is still being sold to nail technicians in Australia and over the world even though the FDA has warned against the use of MMA, they unfortunately are still available on our market, so uneducated and unsuspected nail technicians may still be purchasing this product and contunue to use it on their trusting clients.

MMA is found in the acrylic liquid monomer and is know to cause:

• damage to the natural nail.
• respiratory problems.
• contact dermatitis.
• permanent loss of the natural nail.
• eye damage.
• nose and throat irritation.
• infections as the acrylic is so hard that even a small amount of trauma will cause the nail plate to lift and break from the nail bed.

MMA can also be found in polymer powders, but are safe to use as the molecules are already partly polymerized and are too big to penetrate into the skin.

The safest way to avoid MMA is to check the ingredience of your monomer, make sure it is made of EMA – ethyl methacrylate. EMA is a much safer option.

Warning signs of MMA:

• the product you are bying is extremely cheap.
• the acrylic is hard to file and remove with acetone.
• the acrylic has an unusual intense smell.

It is of the up most importance for your clients and your health, that you do not use MMA monomer to create your nail enhancements.

Things you may be doing wrong:

• You may not have washed both your clients and your hands with warm soapy water.
• You may not have removed all the polish from the nail plate.
• You may not have removed all the eponychium from the cuticle area and nail plate.
• You may not have removed all the shine from the nail plate, especially from around the cuticle and side wall areas.
• For gel you may have left shine on the tip.
• For gel you may have forgotten to seal the free edges before curing.
• You may have not dusted well.
• You may have forgotten to use dehydrator (prep) and or primer.
• You may have gotten acrylic or gel on the cuticle area.
• Your acrylic may be too dry.
• You may not have patted the acrylic enough or sealed well down the sides.
• You may not have etched the gel into the nail plate enough.
• You may have not blended the acrylic or gel flush against the natural nail enough.
• For gel you may have not cured the gel long enough or your lamps may be too weak.
• For gel you may have filed around the free edge and not resealed the edge.

Tips to remind your clients:

• Always use gloves when using chemicals, or in soapy water for long periods of time.
• When using sorboline or lanolin based hand creams be sure to wipe the excess from the cuticle areas.
• Use cuticle oil at least once a day to help keep the acrylic and cuticle area supple (for less stress cracks in the acrylic)and to keep the skin around the cuticle area conditioned (for less hand nails and less likely to cut during a refill or rebalance)
• Advise then to never use clippers to take back length, use a file.
• Advise gel clients to never remove length at home as this will break the seal around the free edge and cause lifting.
• To wear their nails as jewels and not to use them as tools.
• To use non-acetone nail polish remover when removing polish.
• To never tap their nails on anything (table tops) this will cause stress cracks and lifting.
